A Homecoming for Two Manatees: A Story of Conservation and Community

At Bahia Beach, nature isn’t just part of our surroundings, it’s part of who we are. Every ripple in the water, every rustling mangrove, and every creature that calls this place home reminds us of our responsibility to protect and preserve the delicate balance of our ecosystem.

This incredible moment was made possible thanks to a powerful collaboration between Alma de Bahia, the Caribbean Conservatory of Manatee, and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources. Among those present were Rolando Padua, President of Alma de Bahia Foundation and Paulson Puerto Rico; Ricardo Dueñas, COO of Bahia Beach Resort; Marcela Cañón, Executive Director of Alma de Bahia; Tony Minucci, Director and Founder of the Caribbean Conservatory of Manatee; along with other company executives, conservationists, and volunteers. Each person played a crucial role, from lifting and guiding the manatees into the estuary to ensuring they remained calm and hydrated throughout the process. A key step in their release was holding their heads high to prevent confusion, making sure they didn’t mistake the air for water too soon.

This event was about more than just two manatees returning home, it was a testament to what’s possible when people come together for a shared purpose. It was a reminder that every conservation effort, no matter how big or small, makes a difference. We are deeply grateful to Tony Minucci and the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources for entrusting us, for the second time, with such a meaningful release. Their confidence in us underscores our ongoing dedication to environmental responsibility, community involvement, and the protection of Puerto Rico’s natural wonders.
